The girlfriend of an unarmed man shot dead by police seven years ago has spent more than £50,000 to become a lawyer in an attempt to clear his name. Anthony Grainger was gunned down in a car park in Culcheth, Warrington, in 2012 while sat in a car alongside two friends.
Police believed the trio were planning to commit an armed robbery. But a jury took just 40 minutes to clear Mr Grainger of any wrongdoing when he went on trial after his death in 2012.
Mr Grainger’s ‘soulmate’ and partner of four years Gail Grainger, 36, from Bolton, Greater Manchester, has now spent seven years in her fight for justice. She said ‘He deserves to be fought for and if that means I will spend the rest of my life paying off debt so be it.’
Ms Grainger graduated from an undergraduate law degree at Salford University in 2016 and is half way through a masters in criminal justice at the same institution.
Full time student Gail, who changed her name to Anthony’s after his death, said: ‘If the force had just come and apologised and said ‘we are all human, this happened but we will make changes’, that would be different.
‘But unfortunately, I feel like the system is set up for the families to fail in their fight.’
