A long-awaited report into deaths in police custody says families have been failed by the system.
The Home Office is currently reviewing legal protection for police officers who shoot to kill as well as considering whether to transfer the lead role in fighting terrorism from Scotland Yard to the National Crime Agency.
The contract to build Britain’s first titan prison holding more than 2,100 inmates has been signed days before Monday’s deadline, when parliament dissolves for the general election. The justice secretary failed to get approval in time for his other flagship prison project, a 320-place “secure college”.
