The Ministry of Justice has today (26 July 2018) released the latest statistics on safety, deaths and self-harm in custody. The data shows that levels of self-harm and violence in prison continues to escalate.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said three people died after being held in a police cell, and another five died after being held in a cell, becoming unwell and then being pronounced dead in hospital.
A long-awaited report into deaths in police custody says families have been failed by the system.
INQUEST would like to draw attention to its separate findings on the number of young prisoners, aged 18-24, who have taken their lives between January 2000 and June 2015.
